Historically and still today travelers on Route 66 through the Texas Panhandle experience a vast landscape dotted with grain silos, oil rigs, and cattle ranching, emblematic of the region’s economic lifeblood industries. The cultural and economic capitol of this region is Amarillo, named for the color yellow in Spanish. Route 66 once formed an important commercial corridor through Amarillo and the numerous small towns of the Texas Panhandle.
Preservation
Since the decommissioning of Route 66, the roadway has continued to have its champions in Texas. In 1991, the Texas Old Route 66 Association formed and helped establish the Texas Route 66 Museum in McLean. Utilizing Transportation Enhancement funds and local fundraising, the City of Shamrock also restored the iconic Tower Conoco Station and U-Drop Inn. The National Park Service Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program has assisted four projects with cost-share grant funds, including the restoration of the Magnolia Station in Vega.

The 2006 Pixar computer-animated film Cars is set in the cartoon village of Radiator Springs, which was created as a composite of real landmarks and personalities encountered by Pixar artists on multiple research trips on 1,200 miles (1,900 km) of the former U.S. Route 66. Among the buildings and structures based on Route 66 landmarks is a version of Tower Station. Mid Point Route 66
Adrian, Texas is the self proclaimed mid point of Route 66. 1,139 miles West to Los Angeles and 1,139 East to Chicago, Illinois/ Adrien named after an early settler, Adrien Cullen, is the geo-mathematical midpoint of Route 66.
The town was incorporated in 1953. Adrian was bypassed by Interstate 40 in 1969.
The Midpoint Cafe's previous owner Dennis Purschwitz created the iconic photo opportunity that marks the midpoint of 66. formerly the Midpoint cafe was the Adrien Cafe. At the suggestion of Tom Snyder, the President of the US Route 66 association recommended changing the name from Adrian Cafe to Midpoint Cafe.
" The Flo, Mia and Tia characters, based on Midpoint Café proprietor Fran Houser and two servers at the restaurant – sisters Mary Lou and Christina Mendez – appear in the film at "Flo's V-8 Café". As a drive in restaurant for anthropomorphic cars, the automotive themed Flo's V-8 Café became a filling station which boasts "the finest fuel on Route 66". Fran Houser and the Midpoint Café as "home of the ugly crust pie" are acknowledged in the film's credits. In the Route 66 Historic District visitors will find over one mile of art galleries, antique and collectible stores, restaurants and bars in historic buildings. Not only was Route 66 the Mother Road of America, but the district was one of the first residential and business districts in Amarillo. People came from miles around to visit the stores and restaurants located on the strip and dance on the best ballroom floor around at the Nat Ballroom which is now home to over 100 vendors. This historic strip is located on Sixth.
